Let me be clear. I have never owned a Volvo, nor ever wanted to, though I do think the 1800S sport model was very cool.

I do, however have a great story about a Volvo. Sometime, back in the day, the “usual suspects” were drinking….a shot a minute….at Barry’s house. Ferg showed up late from a date and someone had the brilliant idea to “drive to Kansas City and look for women”. We were all drunk as skunks but sober enough to realize that we were way too drunk to drive so we appointed Ferg as our designated driver. What we did not realize was that Ferg had consumed a couple of bottles of wine during his date at the drive-in and was more wasted (and crazier) than any of us. We piled into his dad’s volvo and the 6 of us headed down the very twisty highway by Barry’s. Ferg began speeding up and muttering, “I’m going to kill you all”. We thought he was joking until we swerved around the first big turn. We approached a bridge just after a large curve and somehow fishtailed over it. Immediately after clearing the bridge the car rolled at least once, ending up straddling the drainage ditch on the left side of the road. Glass covered all of us and Ferg was holding his bleeding ear. We did a quick inventory on who was hurt and Tim Sterling didn’t answer. Someone said he was not in the car, he had been thrown out, and was in the ditch but none the worse for the wear . The worst injury was Ferg’s cut and we walked back to Barry’s house to face the consequences. Again the Volvo shows why it is known as a safe car.
